We love sharing knowledge and enriching the people and teams that we interact with. Whether it be expert advice, customized training, analysis or even coaching, we aim to leave you better off than how we found you.
Our core expertise is in engineering aspects of hydrographic surveying with a deep understanding of core fundamental physics and mathematics in all aspects of imaging and mapping the seafloor.
With a strong academic background and an extensive technical network, we can easily collaborate with other experts to help augment our own knowledge and expertise to provide a full solution to any need.
We are trusted advisors to clients needing advice or services on a wide range of topics that take advantage of our expertise in the field of hydrographic surveying. Services range from design and execution of specialized sea acceptance trials for new sonar equipment to algorithmic design and implementation to give clients a cutting edge in their products or services. We can even help with technical visioning to help you and your team adapt to emerging technologies.
Our academic background is augmented by strong skills in Product Development and Product Management, with a focus on acquisition, processing and analysis software and algorithms for multibeam echosounders. Strong communication and collaboration skills enhance the overall process, giving solutions that bring immediate and tangible value to customers.
We have a proven track record of teaching highly technical subject matter in the field of hydrographic surveying, from entry level to University level. Theory taught in the classroom is enriched by two decades of seabed mapping field experience, giving a good practical twist to all instruction to help solidify theoretical concepts with field smarts.
Managerial and leadership skills include Communications, Time Management, Organizational Restructuring, Performance Management, Talent Management, Strategic Planning, Succession Management, Change Management, Continual Improvement, Quality Assurance, Team Building, Scaling and Strategic Partnering. We can coach or mentor you and your team on any of these topics.
After 20 years in academia and the private sector, Jonathan decided to change focus and formed HydroOctave Consulting. His passion now is to help others succeed in their personal, team or company journeys. The services he aims to offer are based on three foundational elements: academic research and teaching, extensive field experience and finally a knack for communicating, teaching and mentoring.
Research areas of interest revolve around the core mathematics and physics involved with multibeam echosounders. Specialty areas include oceanography, effects of refraction, backscatter, multi-sensor integration and uncertainty estimation with 50+ publications and conference proceedings on these topics and more.
With over 40 missions at sea, Jonathan has travelled to all parts of the globe over the last 20 years. Mission goals ranged from routine seabed mapping to extensive field testing, calibration, commissioning, shake downs and testing of new equipment, software or procedures. Strong software development and prototyping skills have always played a role in providing unique tools to meet a variety of needs while at sea with always an eye towards refining operational efficiency.
Jonathan believes strongly in highly effective communication and he believes that this is the foundation that everything is built upon. You need to communicate to engage effectively with others. Teaching has been a lifelong passion of his, culminating in University level instruction at undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of New Brunswick and the University of New Hampshire. With years of experience in supervising undergraduate and graduate students, Jonathan has honed the soft skills needed to mentor, coach and motivate others to reach their goals.
